Top things to do at Exmouth Beach

Exmouth is widely believed to be Britain’s oldest seaside resort; it’s attracted holiday-makers from far and wide for generations, and its beach is perhaps one of the main reasons that people travel to vacate here. Its long sandy shore and sparkling sea have long been an attraction of the town. It also boasts Blue Flag status, for the fifth year running, which is an indication of the high environmental and quality standards. If you’re visiting the beach, you might be curious to know what you can do if you’re spending the day here. Read on to find out more.

Go Rockpooling

Regardless of your age, there’s no better feeling than searching in rockpools for aquatic life whilst at the beach, and luckily Exmouth has plenty to explore. Crabs, starfish, anemones and plenty more can be found in these underwater habitats.

This popular seaside activity is a great way for your little ones to learn more about marine life in a fun and immersive way. Just remember to bring a bucket and a net if you want to analyse these creatures up close!

Play in the Sand

I’m sure many of us have fond memories of going to the beach, building sandcastles or even burying a slightly begrudging parent in the sand. Exmouth’s golden sandy shore is perfect for doing all of those things!

See who can build the biggest sandcastle, dig holes large enough to sit in, play games such as volleyball or Frisbee, the possibilities are endless!

Swim in the Sea

This one is a given if you’re going to the beach – does anyone even go to the beach without paddling at the very least?! Whilst Exmouth’s sea isn’t quite as tropical as Barbados, it is known to be warmer than our Cornish counterparts.

Exmouth Beach is fortunate to be patrolled by RNLI lifeguards during the peak season (check out their website to confirm exact dates) from 10am to 6pm. Two red and yellow flags indicate the patrolled area where it is safest to swim. Never go in a ‘no-swimming’ area which is marked by red flags and be aware of rip currents if you’re going to swim far out.

Kayak or Paddleboard

Exmouth is known for being a watersports haven. Paddleboarding, kayaking, windsurfing, and sailing are just some of the activities you can do here. Whether you’re experienced or a complete beginner, we have a number of great watersports providers who can help you get on the water for a wet and fun-filled day!

Head for Orcombe Point if you’re kayaking or paddleboarding to get a view of the tremendous UNESCO World Heritage Jurassic Coastline. Alternatively, you can paddle up the Exe Estuary, perhaps stop for lunch in one of the towns or villages such as Topsham or Lympstone, along the estuary.

Check out the RNLI Visitor Experience Centre

If you’re interested in the goings on of the RNLI why not head to their Visitor Experience Centre with a viewing gallery which is housed at the RNLI Lifeboat Station. Find out what it’s like to be part of the RNLI and the life-saving work that they do.

Their group of dedicated volunteers also provide a free, behind the scenes tour of the stations on most weekends throughout the year, just be sure to book in advance if this piques your interest!

Stroll along the Promenade

Okay, so this activity isn’t directly on the beach, but the promenade certainly does run alongside the beautiful two-mile shore. In fact, it’s thought to be the longest in Devon!

Perfect for people watching and taking in the beautiful vista, Exmouth’s promenade is often bustling with people enjoying a fresh portion of fish and chips, or soaking up the sun with a cold ice cream. There’s always something going on! Enjoy the variety of traditional seaside amusements such as swinging boats, or head to Queen’s Drive Space for an assortment of fun, family friendly activities!
