As February half-term approaches, families across the UK begin to plan their escapes, seeking destinations that offer both tranquillity and adventure. Nestled on the stunning coast of Devon, Exmouth promises a delightful mix of coastal wonders and fantastic family activities. Whether you’re planning to visit for the whole week or just embark on a day trip here, Exmouth is the place to be this half term!
Exmouth boasts some of the most picturesque coastal landscapes in the UK, but beach days aren’t just for the summer time! February may be chilly, but the bracing air adds to the charm of this coastal retreat.
Stroll along the golden sands of Exmouth Beach and let the fresh sea breeze invigorate your senses. Whether you’re searching for fossils along the Jurassic Coast, building sandcastles, or exploring the rock pools for marine creatures, Exmouth Beach offers the perfect backdrop for both relaxation and adventure.
Enjoy Outdoor Pursuits
A walk along Exmouth’s promenade is a must on a sunny day. If you’re not quite brave enough to take to the water yourself, it’s great place to watch others enjoying their ocean-based activities like kitesurfing or paddle boarding. You can also enjoy a variety of traditional seaside amusements and certainly indulge in an ice-cream! Situated on Exmouth seafront, Queens Space Drive is a popular attraction with a free Jurassic-themed play park.
Speaking of Jurassic-themed attractions, another great family activity is Exmouth’s Dinosaur Trail. Pick up a map from the Tourist Information Office, and follow the trail to find all the dinosaurs dotted around the town, as well as collecting all the brass rubbings to receive a souvenir trail badge.
For nature enthusiasts, Exmouth is a gateway to a plethora of outdoor adventures. The nearby Exe Estuary Trail beckons cyclists and walkers alike, winding its way through picturesque villages and lush countryside. Take a leisurely bike ride along the estuary, pausing to admire the tranquil waters and abundant birdlife that call this area home. With its flat, family-friendly paths, the Exe Estuary Trail offers an accessible way to explore Devon’s natural beauty.
Whilst not in Exmouth, Seaton Tramway is just a short drive from the town and is a fantastic attraction for families. They operate narrow gauge heritage trams between Seaton and Colyton through East Devon’s beautiful Axe Valley, travelling alongside the River Axe estuary. They have a range of experiences such as the bird watching tram and the story tram, plus they will also be hosting the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition over half term!
Indoor Family Activities
Families will find no shortage of activities to keep everyone entertained during their stay in Exmouth, no matter the weather. If you happen to visit on a wet and windy day, there’s no need to fret, there’s plenty of great indoor attractions you can visit.
Situated opposite the promenade, Ocean offers a diverse range of indoor attractions that cater to different interests and ages. From bowling and arcades to a soft play area for younger children, Ocean provides hours of fun regardless of the weather outside.
Step back in time and uncover the rich history of Exmouth at the Exmouth Museum. Housed in a charming 19th-century building, this museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the town’s past with its fun and engaging displays.
For families seeking a thrilling challenge, Excape: Exmouth Escape Room offers an immersive and exhilarating experience that tests teamwork, problem-solving skills, and ingenuity. Located in the heart of Exmouth, Excape features a variety of themed escape rooms where participants must work together to solve puzzles, uncover clues, and unravel mysteries within a set time limit.
While not strictly an indoor attraction, Stuart Line Cruises offers a comfortable and sheltered way to explore the coast and river, making it an ideal option for families looking to escape the elements while enjoying breathtaking views. Set sail from Exmouth Marina aboard one of Stuart Line’s comfortable vessels and embark on a scenic cruise along the Exe Estuary from the comfort of the ship’s indoor seating areas.
