Exmouth has plenty to offer any outdoor enthusiast, whether it is a gentle stand up paddle session or extreme watersports on our dramatic coastline, the town has something to suit everyone both on and off the water.
Kiteboarding or kitesurfing is a sport that involves using wind power with a large power kite to pull a rider across a water. It’s a pretty extreme sport and is perfect for those wanting an adrenaline rush. Exmouth is home to Team Bridge, a family of elite-level kitesurfers that boast countless world and European titles between them. Mum (Steph) is a five-times Kite World Champion and is currently ranked number one in the world. When she is not competing, Steph and her husband Eric offer stand up paddle & kitesurfing lessons from their base at Edge Watersports. The Edge Race Cup, held each year, is an annual spectacle of wonder and inspiration. Lessons are available for all levels.
The estuary is a blessing for South Coast windsurfers due to its excellent north westerly wind, most places are off shore., Pagham is another good north west venue. The duck pond works really well, 2-3 hours before and after high tide, depending upon the range and what lows or highs are expected. Exmouth Watersports is a fantastic activities provider offering windsurfing, kitesurfing, stand up paddle boarding and kayak lessons. Windsurfing lessons are available all year round for 1-2-1 and groups sessions. Full courses are also available.
Stand Up Paddle boarding
Whether you know the sport as paddleboarding, paddlesurfing or stand up paddleboarding (SUP), this watersport has gained enormous popularity in recent years. Edge Watersports and Exmouth Watersports both offer taster sessions, SUP safaris and paddleboard rental if you want to give it a go. Exmouth is great for safe paddle board adventures and tours. From novice to expert there’s a brilliant experience waiting for you, your family and friends.
Kayaking is a great way to see some of the hidden beauty spots of our coastline. There are several companies in East Devon that offer guided kayaking tours of the Jurassic Coast and the Exeter Canoe Loops are a series of self-guided circular canoeing/kayaking trails that link the River Exe and Exeter Ship Canal between Exeter Quayside and the Exe Estuary. Sea Kayak Exmouth spend around 2 hours on the water and personalise the trip for you; some of the options that they can include are kayak surfing, rock hopping, wildlife watching, marshmallow roasting, swimming in hidden coves only accessible from the sea, cooking mussels, making hot chocolate with a Kelly Kettle and mackerel fishing. The possibilities are endless!
Cycling the Exe Trail
Boasting stunning views of the Exe Estuary, the Exe Estuary Trail is hugely popular with locals and tourists alike; if you are feeling energetic you can cycle all the way from Exmouth to Exeter Quay and Exeter City Centre. Or you can cycle up one side of the River Exe and down the other to Starcross, catching the water taxi back to where you started. The Exe Trail is for the most part flat but be aware you will have small sections along the route where you have to climb a little. The only limit is the energy you have in your legs!
Wakeboarding, Waterskiing, Sailing and Rowing are also very popular outdoor activities in Exmouth, it’s hard to pick the top 5 as there is something for everyone, particularly if you love the water!
